Why Read Revelation?

Read Revelation 1:1–20

If someone suggests, “Let’s study Revelation,” responses vary. Some shy away from this book, thinking only scholars can understand it. Others read it like any other book of the Bible, believing the Holy Spirit will reveal new truths. Still others read it to sense the awesome majesty and power of God and to worship Him.

The book itself gives yet another reason: “Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy” (Revelation 1:3). The promise of a blessing provides extra motivation to study this challenging book. It continues, “and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near.” In other words, reading or hearing what Revelation says is not enough. We also need to obey what is written. James 1:22 emphasizes this point as well: “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”

What is your response to Revelation? Is it a challenge? Or do you read it devotionally? However you respond, remember God promises blessings for all who read and obey its teachings. Why not begin reading Revelation today?

Thought for Today: Knowing and obeying God’s Word results in eternal blessings.
