If-Then

Read 1 John 1:1 through 2:29

Scripture is filled with conditional statements, those “if-then” statements that give us insight into God’s character, especially when His part of the equation is dependent on our actions. Today’s passage contains a powerful if-then statement that gives us both great hope and great peace. “If we confess our sins, [then] he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).

Can it really be that easy? Is forgiveness truly wrapped in such an accessible package? Yes! Your forgiveness and redemption lie in recognizing that you are a sinner and in confessing your sins to God. No complicated prayers or formulas are needed. There is no need of someone to seek forgiveness for you.

Under the direction of the Holy Spirit and with this one simple conditional statement, the apostle John revealed the wonderful path to forgiveness—confess your sins to God and He will forgive you. Let the truth of this conditional statement soak in and give you the peace that only forgiveness from God can bring.
